PROOF & LOGIC IN MATHEMATICS

Proof and Logic in mathematics is a course designed to teach students how to construct mathematical proofs.  The emphasis is always on the use of logic as a reasoning tool.  The majority of this course is devoted to "translating" statements from English to logical symbolism and vice versa.  Although most students find it easy to follow the rules and produce acceptable demonstrations, there is still considerable scope for ingenuity and individuality, especially on quantified logic.  The following are topics normally covered in this course:

  • The Language of Logic

  • Demonstrations

  • The Logic of Quantified Statements

  • The Algebra of Sets

  • Mathematical Induction
